Rabbi's Table with Rabbi David Meyer
The story of the Jewish people really begins with looking up, as Abraham was instructed by God at the start of his spiritual and historic journey, “Look up to the stars and count them, as if, indeed you could count them…” (Genesis 15:5).
Since our very beginnings, the wonder and awe evoked by the heaven’s expanse has been an essential aspect of Jewish spirituality, worship and wisdom. As philosopher, Abraham Joshua Heschel has written, “The beginning of awe is wonder, and the beginning of wisdom is awe.”
So for our Shabbat tisch and study on Friday, April 19, we will explore traditional Jewish texts on the insights gained by the Jewish spiritual discipline of looking up! We will consider how the flow of Jewish time is marked and measured in the moon’s phases, as well as the contemplations from our sages of old and contemporary reflections on the Jewish meanings of the constellations, comets, shooting stars and eclipses. Our study will take place only a few days following a total solar eclipse to be witnessed in wide swaths across the United States, so we will also share some personal and timely reflections. Cost is $18/person. Please bring your own wine.
